filipetheman, 22.07.11 17:46
really really enjoyed seeing a lot hand combo analysis during the hands.in the future a type of video which i would love to see personally would be instead of dissecting your hand vs villain´s range, do a type of range vs range video, and how you would play diferent type of hands in that situation and working more with frequencies.

Amazing the amount of information that goes through his head while making a decision. All those combinations, numbers, percentages... wow. I take it that is what is needed to be very successful at those high levels. I wonder why do so many people waste their times with poker knowing they don't have that type of analytical skills to be successful at the really important levels. Something to think about...#46

nice vid. but the ps.com intro is way too loud! this sound almost blew my head off!! ^^#48
Scooop, 22.07.11 21:37
the explanation in the first hand is excellent. In my mind what one could learn from this hand (if one didn't knew it anyways) is that it is a serious flaw in your game plan to tripple barrel OOP on low paired boards with deep stacks with a high frequency, because the range your are repping with a riverbet is so small and even your overpairs looks pretty marginal, when you face a river raise.
That's why you can turn even top of your bluff call range into a pure bluff in this spot, because he has basically no broke range there.
I think a lot of players have quite a few of these leaky spots, such analysis like you did can indeed reveal them.
The QQ hand on the other hand is imho just standard. If he is overagressive it is just so logical to turn topset into a bluffcatcher and give him rope to hang himself...
Just close your eyes and call him all the way down - unbelievable to see so many strong players at 2+2 seriously argue for a river fold just because the board looks scary, a fold there would be absolutely criminal imo.
great video, keep it up that way :-)

Hi Jose,I really enjoyed this video, its fascinating to get an insight into the complexities of a deep, high stakes hands.
Having said that, I would like to make a suggestion for future videos.
Since many of your viewers will be midstakes players who are good but not great players, and who spend a lot of time grinding and not as much as they should working on their game, it would be great to see a series that focuses on how players such as this could start to use the type of analysis you showed us here to work on their own games.
For people who have rarely done much work like this other than putting the odd range into pokerstove, it would be great to have a series showing us some basic ways we can analyze some of the more common spots we find ourselves in - no need to work on situations as specific and complex as the ones in this video just yet!
Of course if you needed someone to contribute hand histories for something like this I would be happy to oblige!
Either way, thanks for a great video and I'll be looking forward to the next one.

one question on the first hand, you talk about the reg not isolating the fish all that much because he is extremely agro post flop, but still if hes playing 40 ish% of hands he has air so much that it isnt that hard to play him IP with a wider range then the 15% you talk about the reg isolating. i believe it should be slightly wider, what are your thoughts on that and what would be your isolating range against this fish in particular in the reg villain´s shoes??#73

Finally a really good production. I like the format a lot and I believe it's quite some work to put all the flopzilla stuff onto powerpoint. However, instead of just taking the lineare ranges, a quick glance at the hands villain would really show up with in any spot given on what you think he'd either bet or check on any street, would probably even be more beneficial, if you take these into consideration while actually playing the hand. Moreover, one thing that I'd regard as helpful especially in hand no.2 would be, if you raised balance (and its significance/insignificance over max.EV) as a topic, gave some examples of hands you'd play out the same way or slightly different, simultaneously listing pro's and con's. Finally, during the vid you mentioned some facts about the villains, saying e.g. he was 1,5bb at 5/10. It'll be awesome stating in how far that becomes part of your thought-process.
Overall just a very very good vid. Keep going!

great video. just one note about turning 99 into a bluff. I think u clarified that u have a lot of value-combos by the river. So from a gto perspective u should have a bluffing range, which should naturally consist of the top of your folding range. To conclude, i don't think villain can pwn you by bet/calling TT+ b/c it should be -EV or BE vs ur entire range (as long as u don't get out olf line with ur frequencies)#82

First of all thanks for this great video. I have some suggestions for your next presentations.1.) Maybe it would be better to visualize villains ranges using a Screenshot of the Handrangeselection Tool of eg. Pokerstove instead of only writing the hand as a simple string.
2.) Maybe it would be better to use a replayer to present the hands. Personally I dont want to see how the hand played out on further street if the flop action is considered etc.
There were two mistakes on the slides:
percieve <-> perceive,
inferrence <-> inference
I really liked the part about the adjustments vs this particular fish.
Keep up the great work!

watched a part of the vid a 2nd time now and have to admit that - beside ur poker skills - u might be one of the best coaches Ive ever listened to (beside PG). U put a lot of work into the script I guess and invested into the preparation and it was worth it! Long story short: Ur didactic sills are impressive!I hope u will keep this motivation in the future because this is the first time in years I could indeed learn sth. from a NL video (I mean didactic-wise, cauz the hands were kind of standard imo) ;)

Great vid! Would love to hear more about timing tells & would like to see you work with Flopzilla. However, I found some mistakes in your river shove (hand 1) calculations.
You're not shoving 14.908 to win 11.100, but 19.208 to win 11.100
Somehow you were still fairly accurate with his 'need to fold' percentage. This should be at 63% instead of 65%.
Thanks for the video and hope to see a new one soon!
#115
Gangstahhh, 25.07.11 13:53
Very nice,What I do find a bit odd, in the last hand, you do c/c, but you say he has 15 flush combo's, but this is almost the best hand you can have (The queens), and I think very very few players would actualy overbet the river with flushes, just because they expect you to be pretty weak to the board, and THEY just think you're gonna fold sooo much. Now it's certainly a possibility that he is a very good player who would actually overbet to rep so much bluffs, I certainly think he would think about it longer than 3 seconds, if he has a bluff he probably thought that this was the perfect bluff card, but to have a flush like 98dd he would probably think for like 6/7 seconds before he would think of to overbet the river to rep his bluffs and make you call light. (still assuming he's a very good player, which he might not even be, and wouldn't overbet the river with 98dd at all)

Girah, 29.07.11 15:59
Hey guys, thanks so much for all your feedback. I worked really hard on this video and reading all your comments means a lot to me and makes all my effort worthwhile. I learnt a lot from this first video-making experience, and also received lots of great advice from the smart people over at Poker-Strategy, and have several things that I definitely intend on improving on for my next English video, which, due to popular demand, will probably be a live HU video. I can promise you all I will give 100% to every video I make for Poker-Strategy, aAlso, I apologize for not including results, but it's something I often disregard in my own HH analysis, as I feel they are far too often relatively irrelevant, and may lead to erroneous conclusions about the EV of plays; they might contradict an excellent analysis, or corroborate poor analysis; both of which are unwanted and easily avoidable consequences. In my opinion, it's much more important to disregard short-term variance and results-oriented thinking and instead focus on discerning our edge and guaranteeing long-term profits through strong, rational analysis. But since so many people asked, I'll post them :P. First hand he typed "88 or 44?" in chat then folded, when I later asked he said he had folded 22. Second hand I snap-called and he showed up with 69 of spades.
Finally, a lot of you commented on how time-consuming and therefore unpractical this whole process is, and whether it's even possible to do in-game. The answer is yes, and it doesn't take a genious either. What you need to do is practice this type of thought process time and time again so that eventually it becomes second nature to you and you are intuitively familiar with the calculations and logical processes inherent to solving the most +ev action in every poker hand. After all, what you're doing in your head when deciding on what action to take in a hand is just a short-hand, speedy version of what I did here. Practice will serve to deepen and speed up your thought processes. Use this video as a guide/template to the type of HH analysis you should look to be doing away from the tables- feel free to post hands on the Poker-Strategy forums and I'll try and comment as much as I can.
Thanks again so much for the comments guys, I'll take everything to heart and try and improve for my next one!

the second hand is an imperfect analysis imo because here i feel villain feels our range is more capped than it is (i feel that it doesn't look like we have a set here very often at all). consequently villain's value range is wider and actually includes a bunch of hands that we beat IMO.#150
